Songs of the Month!

posted on May.13, 2009

Well, summer is officially here and in radio land that can mean only one thing- summer jams! Sure, you could tune to some top 40 station and hear Flo Rida ’till your heart’s content, but here at TSR we’ve got some tracks that’ll spin yo head right round:

Art Brut- “Alcoholics Unanimous”
Art Brut, the oddballs of the angular rock scene, are back with another pensive song contemplating the inner workings of the universe… just kidding! Vocalist/spoken word-storyteller Eddie Argos leads a rambunctious indie-punk assault on the topic of binge drinking, recovering, and apologizing the next day. A prelude, perhaps, to some of our summers?

Akron/Family- “River”
So, the new record from these offbeat Brooklyn minstrels is a tad inconsistent, but boy did they nail it on “River.” Fans of Animal Collective and Yeasayer, take notice! On track two of “Set ‘Em Wild Set ‘Em Free” Akron/Family have found the perfect balance between freak-folk weirdness and campfire singalongs… a summer jam to be sure!

Great Northern- Houses
Take a listen to the inescapably driving chorus of “Houses,” and you might think you’re listening to some Breeders-esque all-girl indie band from the early 90′s. Think again! Great Northern have fuzzed things out for record number two (to mixed reactions) but they’ve delivered their most addicting song to date.

King Khan & The Shrines- “(How Can I Keep You) Outta Harm’s Way”
A year after issuing a career-spanning compilation of King Khan’s garage soul extravaganza, Vice Records have given the re-master treatment to their fantastic 2007 album, “What Is?” Anyone growing bored with indie music needs to hear this howlin’ frontman and his 8-piece retro-soul band. Track one is an excellent introduction! Then YouTube live performances as necessary.
