At the interest session you can learn a little history about WTSR, learn how you can get involved, take a tour of the station, ask us any questions you may have, and even chime in with your own ideas about how you would like to help!

If you have any questions please e-mail the Darren Farinas (stationmgr@wtsr.org). Otherwise, we will see you in the coming weeks!

Songs of the Month- August

by music on Aug.25, 2009, under WTSR

Ah, back to school, or’ BTS’ if you’ve ever worked in retail. Time to pack up your clothes, order those textbooks, and study up for your multiple fantasy football drafts. There are, of course, benefits of being back on campus- seeing old friends, having something worthwhile to do on weekends, and most of all, being within range of 91.3 FM WTSR. I know you’ve been listening loyally all summer via the interweb, but here are some jams to look forward to while you drive on campus to that first week of classes:

Yacht- “Psychic City”
This is the perfect background song to reading up on triangles. Why? Because this newly-signed DFA trio are absolutely obsessed with three-sided polygons, and pass around pamphlets on the matter at their shows. But their music is pretty good too, and this spunky helping of sampled beats, walking bass lines, and deadpan vocals is set to be their breakout single.

The Jaguar Club- “Where No Wild Things Are”
This band is cool enough to not only list the likes of Pulp, Talking Heads, and Echo & The Bunnymen in their influences, but also the years 1977 and 1994! It’s sure easy to name drop, but these Brooklyn new wave-revivalists can certainly match their good tastes with grade-A dreary post-punk. “Where The Wild Things Are” sounds like it was destined for the glory of a John Hughes soundtrack, only made 20 years too late.

Lushlife- “Another Word For Paradise”
Philly MC Lushlife was awesome enough to make a mixtape of Kanye West/Pet Sounds mash-ups called West Sounds. Unsurprisingly, his second long-player is simply too cool for school, especially this cut. Lush does a fantastic job of crafting positive indie hip-hop without coming off as cheesy or deliberate, and even evokes the crossover potential of Lupe and Kanye with some crisp, clean beats and sparkling production.

Band of Skulls- “I Know What I Am”
This UK import are a band to keep your eyes on for some serious crossover attention in the coming months. The sexy strut of their garage rock jam, “I Know What I Am” sounds like it was crafted to be that indie rock song that’s used in every commercial. I could see it taking on Jet and The CSS in an iPod selling competition.

Patrick Wolf- “Damaris”
When he’s not crafting hilarious album art, throwing fits onstage, or apologizing for it later (“Im sorry for acting like a wolf”), Patrick Wolf likes to make really awesome music. Though he sounds like some odd combination of Rufus Wainwright, Beirut, and The Lord of the Rings Soundtrack, “Damaris” is perhaps Wolf at his most epic. Swirling strings and medieval-style horns never sounded so delightful.
