Songs of the Month – August

The summer is almost at an end. But that doesn’t mean that you have to be sad all the time. Let WTSR cheer you up with the best music around!
Arcade Fire – Ready To Start/The Suburbs/Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
There’s so much to say about the Arcade Fire and their new album The Suburbs. But that’s for another time. And yes, those are three separate songs because honestly all three are so good that choosing a favorite is like trying to choose between fudge ripple and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. Sprawl II features the beautiful vocals of Régine Chassagne and is absolutely amazing. The Suburbs and Ready to Start are the Arcade Fire in all they’re glory. So what are you waiting for? Start listening.
Wavves – Post Acid
Wavves third release, King of the Beach, is absolutely excellent. There are so many great songs on this album that picking one song from it is almost impossible. But since I have to make a choice, “Post Acid” is it. “Post Acid” is fun, full of energy, and is played at a fast paced. Plus it also has that summer feel which means that as the season fades away you can try to hold on to it for as long as possible.
Eli “Paperboy” Reed – Name Calling
Come and Get It is extraordinarily fun and that’s all there is to say on the matter. It’s full of retro tunes that will make you yearn for the days of good funk and R&B was prevalent. “Name Calling” is the best example of Reed’s talent. Reed is loud, fast paced, and has a trendy hair style, what more can you ask for?

The Drums – Skippin’ Town
The Drums self-titled debut is yet another album that is very, very good. And if you want to hold on to the last vestiges of summer like a desperate man hanging onto the precipice of a cliff then this is a record to do it with. The light feel of this record is relaxing and the harmonies are really good.
The Limousines – Very Busy People
A song about people busy doing leisurely activities, “Very Busy People” is an interesting song that is just so insanely catchy with great synth hooks and really amusing lyrics, that includes a shout out to Donnie Darko,. However, it also manages to be just the right amount of cute. There’s just no way to not love this song.

Best Coast – Boyfriend
What do you get when you combine dreamy vocals, love for the west coast, and a cat named Snacks? I’ll tell you, it’s Best Coast. Bethany Cosentino’s dreamy style of pop music is alluring and really enjoyable. “Boyfriend,” the lead off track on Crazy For You, is just so laid back but still kinda catchy.
