Music Review: The Kooks – Junk of the Heart

posted on Nov.30, 2011

The Kooks
“Junk of the Heart”
Release Number: 3rd
Hailing From: East Sussex, England
Genre: Indie Rock
Label: Virgin Records

The Kooks began their journey back in 2004 when Luke Pritchard, Hugh Harris, Paul Garred, and Max Rafferty came together while students at Brighton Institute of Modern Music. The band was quickly picked up by Virgin Records, a mere three months after the band’s conception. The group admits they weren’t initially ready for the deal but couldn’t pass up such an opportunity. Following the recording contract, The Kooks released Inside In/Inside Out in early 2006, with favorites like “Naïve”, “She Moves in Her Own Way”, and “Ooh La”. With the release of their second album Konk, the Kooks did not receive as much critical acclaim; “Always Where I Need to Be” was the main successful track of the album. Now we get to Junk of the Heart, which has the potential to be the Kooks most successful album yet.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – “If I Had A Gun”

posted on Nov.29, 2011

This song is from the new album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Some of you might remember Noel Gallagher as the lead guitarist and songwriter for Oasis (Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger, What’s the Story Morning Glory?, etc.) The whole album is actually really good!

You can find the album on iTunes.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Hysterical

posted on Nov.18, 2011

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
Release Number: 3rd
Hailing From: Brooklyn, NY and Philadelphia, PA
Genre: Alternative Rock
Label: Self-released

It’s hard to tell whether or not Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s 2003 self-titled debut is a blessing or a curse. One on hand it is a near-perfect record that brought out a refreshing take on alternative rock with lead singer Alec Ounsworth’s cracking wail coupled with a mix of heavy chords and buzzing synth, all self-released. On the other hand it is now serving as a gold standard for the rest of their albums and Hysterical just does not compare.

Their 2007 sophomore record, Some Loud Thunder, shows evidence of some maturing in their sound, but sometimes maturation is not for the better. They moved from fun melodies to more serious tunes with darker lyrics. The guitar sounded less garbled and scratchy, the power of synth is taken advantage of, and Ounsworth’s vocals became more well rounded, to the dismay of many fans. They tried to mimic their unique sound with the intro track, “Some Loud Thunder”, offering a heavy distortion that is almost painful to listen to. This evolution continued in the form of Hysterical.
