Listener’s Block: Werk It

posted on Jan.27, 2014

Welcome back, listeners. Congrats on finishing your first week of classes. Whether you spent winter break working low-pay jobs, padding your résumés, or shamelessly bumming like a hobo, the start of a new semester always means a chance to start anew. If you, like most people (myself included), gave up on those so-called New Year’s resolutions not even a week into January, here’s a playlist to fluff your feathers and drag yourself out of your Netflix binge. Oh Land’s “White Nights” will not only get you to the gym and work out but also motivate you to run those extra ten minutes on the treadmill. And maybe, just maybe, “Medicate Or Stimulate” by Minutes Til Midnight will inspire you to care about that class you’re just taking to fulfill yet another liberal learning requirement. Go forth and give this Listener’s Block playlist a try; it’s okay if you feel like Beyoncé, even for just a second.

Listener’s Block: StuDYING

posted on Nov.25, 2013

What the heck? We’re in that final stretch of the semester already? But it’s not even Thanksgiving yet! Indeed, folks, sadly it’s time to buckle down again and live the rest of our days out in the library. And while we may feel like our brains will literally melt from the fact absorbing, paper writing, and problem solving never-ending list of things to do, this playlist here is built to get you in and stay in the zone. No longer are the days when you cry inside whilst writing nonsensical research papers or when you experience a near-Britney breakdown (circa 2007) as you cram for yet another exam. From now on, you approach deadlines with the effortless gusto and courage of Ned Stark. Packed with woozy instrumentals, mellow vocals, ambient synths, and foreign lyrics, this playlist will be on repeat as you fearlessly battle the war that is against a declining GPA. Godspeed, listeners.

Fall Concert Review: Grouplove, the Knocks, and Saints of Valory

posted on Nov.10, 2013

Saints of Valory, the Knocks and Grouplove rocked out at Kendall Hall this past Saturday. The Saints of Valory, the first opener played some songs from their album Possibilities which was released over the summer. Their hit song, Neon Eyes, was received well by the almost sold-out crowd. They also covered Royals by Lorde which got the crowd excited. The band, which acknowledged their relative anonymity, surely picked up some new fans. The second opener, the Knocks is composed of Ben Rottner and James Patterson. Coming on after The Saints of Valory got the crowd on their feet, The Knocks started fast. But their poor vocals (horribly unclear), soon got a large portion of the crowd to return their seats. Their hit song, Dancing With the DJ, features a catchy hook, but unfortunately, left the two men dancing with themselves. Grouplove came on after the lackluster performance by the Knocks. The Los Angeles based group, played their hits, including Tongue Tied, Shark Attack, Slow and Itchin on a Photograph. The band played with a lot of energy. There were many times where you could find lead singer and guitarist, Christian Zucconi spinning in circles or playing guitar lying on the ground. The band released their newest album Spreading Rumours in September and it was well received. Overall the night was a good one for music lovers or for people who went to the concert looking for a good time.

Listener’s Block: Shower Sing-Alongs

posted on Nov.10, 2013

Happy Monday, folks. It’s that time of year again – when every day seems like “crunch time” for never-ending projects, presentations, and exams. Everywhere you go, it seems like every student on campus is either wearing sweats, power napping, or stress eating (or all the above. That’s cool. I don’t judge). As we near the end of the semester, the lack of personal hygiene becomes more and more socially acceptable. Of course, while our time may be limited, let us not forget to enjoy and cherish those few moments in which we can hop in the shower, belt our hearts out, and smell approachable again. Here’s a playlist to ensure you maximize the amazing feels you get while you’re under that shower head:
